A total library, in your browser
Total Library is a working model of a very old idea: a library that holds every book that could ever be written. It is free, it has no accounts and no advertising, and it runs entirely on your device.
Where the idea comes from
In 1939 Jorge Luis Borges published an essay, "The Total Library", tracing the thought experiment from Aristotle and Cicero through Lewis Carroll and Kurd Lasswitz: if a finite alphabet is combined in every possible way, the result contains everything. Two years later he turned it into the story "The Library of Babel", with its hexagonal galleries, its 410-page volumes, and its librarians searching a universe of noise for one line of sense. This site takes its name from the essay and its architecture from the story.
In 2015 Jonathan Basile built libraryofbabel.info, the first site to make the library navigable: he realised that a reversible pseudo-random function could act as the whole library at once, so that any page could be generated from its address and any text located. That insight is the foundation here too, and this project exists in gratitude to his.
What is different here
- Independent code and constants. The engine was written from scratch and uses its own published constants (see how it works). Pages do not sit at the same addresses as on libraryofbabel.info.
- Everything runs on your device. There is no server behind the search; the site can be installed and used offline.
- Permanent, shareable links. A found page has an address you can copy; exact-match finds produce short links that carry the text itself.
- An honest explanation. The algorithm is documented in plain language with its constants and a test vector, so that "is it fake?" has a real answer.
- Built for phones as much as desktops. Pages reflow to 40 columns on small screens; keyboard readers turn pages with the arrow keys.
What it is not
It is not an oracle. The library contains every sentence that could be written, so it contains every true one and every false one with equal indifference. Nothing found here was written by anyone; the letters were placed by arithmetic, and the meaning is yours.
